Uhlich Children's Home is Formed

Women of St. Pauls form the German Widows and Orphans Society to aid German American children who were orphaned and mothers who were widowed during the Civil War; Christine Rathsfeld cares for the orphans in a home just north of the church and later in a home at Clark and Webster.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Uhlich donate land at 24th and Wentworth to the church to generate income for the German Orphan Home.

In 1869 the orphans home, now called Uhlich Evangelical Lutheran Orphan Asylum, is incorporated.

Uhlich Home lives on today as UCAN, a multi-faceted organization that serves youth. UCAN's mission statement is: "Youth who have suffered trauma can become our future leaders."
