Water Powered Pipes

Our Pipe Organ Powered By Water?

Until 1924 the pipe organ at St. Pauls was indeed powered by water. The water drove a turbine which produced the air necessary to play the organ. Our pipe organ was “completely electrified” in 1924, which means that prior to 1924 the instrument was entirely a mechanical action with metal or wooden “trackers” going from each key and pedal to let air from the water driven blower into the pipes. There is a very funny letter from Pastor John in the years preceding the “electrification” to the Alderman, asking that he implore people in the neighborhood to not bathe during church services so the water pressure wouldn’t drop and affect the way our pipe organ played in worship.
